How long before you can walk on a sealcoated driveway?
Plan for a minimum of 24 hours before foot traffic, and 48 hours to be safe. Sealcoat goes down as a liquid emulsion and has to shed its water and solvents through evaporation before the surface is dry enough to touch. In warm, dry, sunny conditions the surface can feel dry to the touch in as little as 4 to 8 hours, but feeling dry is not the same as being cured — the layer underneath is still soft and will scuff underfoot.
Pets are the common culprit: dog claws in particular will leave permanent scratch marks in a coat that is dry on top but soft below. Keep animals off for the full 24 to 48 hours.
How long before you can drive on it?

What makes sealcoat cure faster or slower?
Cure speed is driven almost entirely by weather and surface conditions. The main factors:
- Temperature: warmth is the biggest lever. Above 70°F and curing is fast; below 60°F it slows dramatically; near 50°F overnight it can stall and the coat may fail.
- Sunlight: direct sun warms the pavement and accelerates evaporation. A shaded driveway cures noticeably slower.
- Humidity: high humidity slows evaporation and extends every stage. Dry air speeds it up.
- Wind: a steady breeze helps lift off the evaporating moisture.
- Number of coats: a two-coat application takes longer than a single coat.
- Pavement moisture: sealing a damp surface traps water underneath and can cause the coat to blister or fail entirely.
Why does temperature matter so much?
Sealcoat is an emulsion — sealer solids suspended in water. It cures as that water evaporates and the solids fuse. Evaporation needs heat: warm pavement releases moisture fast, while cold pavement holds onto it. That is why the same job done on a 75°F June afternoon can be driven on in 48 hours, while the same job on a 55°F October day may need 72 hours or more and carries a higher risk of a soft, under-cured coat.

What happens if you walk or drive on it too soon?
Premature traffic causes avoidable, permanent damage. Common results of going on too early include scuff marks (especially from shoe soles turning), tire peel marks where tires pulled sealer off the asphalt, tracked sealer on shoes brought into the house or garage, and paw prints from pets. Sharp low-speed tire turns in the first 72 hours are particularly damaging. None of these ruin the protective value of the coat entirely, but they do leave permanent cosmetic marks that the next coat will only partially hide.
How can you protect the fresh coat while it cures?
A few simple precautions protect your investment during the cure window:
- Block the driveway with cones, tape, or a parked vehicle barrier so no one forgets
- Keep pets inside for the first 24 to 48 hours — claws are the top cause of marks
